Mootoriüksused, often translated as "motor units," are the fundamental functional components of muscle contraction. A motor unit consists of a single motor neuron and all of the muscle fibers that it innervates. The motor neuron is a nerve cell that transmits electrical signals from the central nervous system to the muscle. When a motor neuron fires, it causes all of the muscle fibers it is connected to to contract simultaneously.

The size of a motor unit varies considerably. Some motor units contain only a few muscle fibers, while others can contain hundreds or even thousands. Smaller motor units, innervating fewer fibers, tend to produce finer, more precise movements, such as those involved in eye movements or finger dexterity. Larger motor units, with more fibers, are responsible for generating greater force and are involved in powerful movements like those of the legs or back.

The recruitment of motor units is a key mechanism for controlling muscle force. When a weak contraction is required, only a few small motor units are activated. As the demand for force increases, larger motor units are progressively recruited, leading to a stronger overall contraction. This orderly recruitment of motor units, from smallest to largest, allows for smooth and graded control of muscle activity. The nervous system determines which motor units are activated and how frequently they fire, thereby regulating both the strength and speed of muscle contractions.
