Monopolilähteet is a term used in Finnish economic and legal contexts to refer to sources of monopoly power. These sources can be diverse and include various factors that allow a single firm or a small group of firms to dominate a market. Understanding these sources is crucial for competition authorities and policymakers aiming to prevent market distortions and ensure fair competition.

One common source of monopoly power is control over essential resources. If a company owns or has exclusive access to a raw material or a critical input that is necessary for production in a particular industry, it can leverage this control to create a monopoly. Another significant source is technological superiority or patents. A firm that develops a groundbreaking technology or holds exclusive patent rights for a product or process can prevent competitors from entering the market or offering similar goods, thus establishing a temporary or long-term monopoly.

Economies of scale can also lead to monopolistic tendencies. In industries where the cost per unit of output decreases significantly as production volume increases, large firms may be able to produce at a lower cost than smaller competitors. This cost advantage can make it difficult for new firms to enter the market and for existing smaller firms to compete, potentially leading to a situation where one or a few large firms dominate.
