Monomeeriüksuse

Monomeeriüksuse is a term that translates from Estonian to "monomer unit". It refers to the repeating structural unit that makes up a polymer. Polymers are large molecules composed of many repeating subunits, and each of these individual subunits is a monomer. The process by which monomers link together to form a polymer is called polymerization.

In chemistry, understanding the monomer unit is crucial for determining the properties of a polymer. The type of monomer, its chemical structure, and how it is arranged within the polymer chain all significantly influence the resulting material's characteristics, such as its strength, flexibility, solubility, and reactivity. For example, polyethylene, a common plastic, is formed by the polymerization of ethylene monomers, each consisting of two carbon atoms and four hydrogen atoms. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), another widely used polymer, is derived from vinyl chloride monomers.
