It refers to a phenomenon in acoustics and signal processing where one signal, the modulator, alters the characteristics of another signal, the carrier. This alteration can involve changes in amplitude, frequency, or phase.

In the context of sound and music, the modulator effect is a core principle behind various audio effects. For instance, amplitude modulation (AM) can create tremolo, where the loudness of a sound fluctuates rhythmically.
