Mnp

Mnp, short for Mobile Number Portability, is a telecommunications feature that lets a customer switch from one mobile network operator to another while retaining the same phone number. Implemented in many countries since the late 1990s and 2000s, Mnp is designed to promote competition and simplify switching for consumers. In some markets it also covers fixed-line and Voice over IP numbers.

Operation and process: A customer seeking to switch contacts the new operator, who verifies identity and number eligibility, checks for any dues or contractual obligations, and initiates a porting request. The current operator processes the request and, after authorization, the number assignment is transferred to the new operator within a country-defined porting window. During the transition, the customer may experience a short service interruption, and the new provider activates service for the retained number.

Requirements and codes: In many markets, the customer must provide a porting code or reference number issued by the current operator; regulatory authorities set timelines and disallow charges beyond standard porting fees.

Limitations and variations: Porting policies vary by country and operator. Some numbers may be disabled for porting due to overdue bills, contract restrictions, or number types. Most markets restrict porting to the same country; international porting is uncommon and may be subject to different rules.

Impact: Mnp enhances consumer choice and can drive price competition and service quality improvements, though it does not guarantee better terms if the new operator's network coverage or plans are weaker.
