Mitoottinen

Mitoottinen is a term derived from the Greek words "mitos," meaning thread, and "ottos," meaning eight. It refers to a type of cell division that occurs in eukaryotic cells, specifically in the cytoplasm. Mitoottinen is distinct from mitosis, which occurs in the nucleus. During mitoottinen, the cytoplasm divides into two daughter cells, while the nucleus remains undivided. This process is crucial for the growth and development of certain types of cells, such as those in the liver and muscle tissue.

The mitoottinen process involves several key steps. First, the cytoplasm begins to constrict, forming a furrow that eventually pinches off to create two separate cells. This is facilitated by the action of actin filaments and myosin molecules, which contract and pull the cytoplasm apart. The organelles within the cytoplasm, such as mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum, are distributed between the two daughter cells.

Mitoottinen is often accompanied by cytokinesis, the division of the cytoplasm, which can occur through two main mechanisms: contractile ring formation or abscission. In contractile ring formation, a ring of actin and myosin filaments forms at the cell's equator and contracts to pinch off the daughter cells. In abscission, the plasma membrane breaks apart, and the daughter cells are separated by the formation of new plasma membranes.

Mitoottinen is an essential process for the growth and maintenance of multicellular organisms. It allows for the expansion of cell populations without the need for nuclear division, which can be energetically costly.
