Middelstrømhastighet is a concept used to describe the average speed of a fluid flow within a conduit or across a surface. It is distinct from the maximum velocity, which typically occurs at the center of a flow profile, and the minimum velocity, often found at the boundaries due to friction. This average velocity provides a single representative value that characterizes the overall movement of the fluid.

Calculating middelstrømhastighet is crucial in various engineering and scientific applications. For instance, in fluid dynamics, it is used to determine flow rates, pressure drops, and heat transfer coefficients. In pipe flow, the middelstrømhastighet is often calculated by integrating the velocity profile over the cross-sectional area of the pipe and then dividing by that area. This integration accounts for the fact that fluid moves at different speeds across the pipe's width.

The relationship between middelstrømhastighet and maximum velocity depends on the flow regime. For laminar flow, which is smooth and orderly, the middelstrømhastighet is exactly half of the maximum velocity. However, in turbulent flow, which is characterized by chaotic eddies and mixing, the ratio of middelstrømhastighet to maximum velocity is higher, typically around 0.8 to 0.9, because the turbulent mixing tends to distribute momentum more evenly across the flow. Understanding this distinction is vital for accurate fluid flow analysis.
