Metallográfiai refers to the scientific study of the physical structure and components of metals and their alloys. It involves preparing a metal sample for examination and then observing its microstructure using various techniques, primarily optical microscopy and electron microscopy. This examination allows metallurgists to understand how the material's properties, such as strength, ductility, and hardness, are related to its internal structure.

The metallographic process typically begins with sample preparation. This involves cutting a representative piece of the metal, mounting it in a resin for easier handling, and then grinding and polishing it to a mirror-like finish. This removes any surface imperfections that could interfere with observation. Following polishing, the sample is usually etched with a chemical reagent. Etching selectively attacks different phases or grain boundaries within the metal, revealing the underlying microstructure.

Once prepared, the sample is examined under a microscope. Optical microscopy uses visible light to magnify the surface, allowing for the observation of grain size, shape, and distribution, as well as the presence of different phases and inclusions. For finer details beyond the resolution of optical microscopes, electron microscopy techniques like scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) are employed. These techniques use electron beams and offer much higher magnifications and resolutions, revealing nanoscale features.
