Mesenkyymiä, also known as mesenchyme, is a loosely organized embryonic connective tissue. It plays a crucial role in the development of many tissues and organs in vertebrates. Mesenchymal cells are multipotent stem cells, meaning they have the potential to differentiate into a variety of specialized cell types. These include osteoblasts (bone-forming cells), chondrocytes (cartilage-forming cells), myocytes (muscle cells), and adipocytes (fat cells), among others.

The mesenchyme originates from the mesoderm, one of the three primary germ layers formed during early embryonic development. It can also arise from the neural crest, a transient structure that forms along the dorsal side of the developing nervous system. Migratory mesenchymal cells spread throughout the embryo, contributing to the formation of bones, cartilage, muscles, blood vessels, and connective tissues of various organs. Its amorphous structure, characterized by cells embedded in an extracellular matrix, allows for this widespread migration and differentiation. The precise signals that guide mesenchymal cell differentiation are complex and involve intricate interactions with neighboring cells and the surrounding microenvironment. This developmental plasticity makes mesenchyme essential for building the complex structures of a multicellular organism.
