Mesenchyme is a type of undifferentiated connective tissue that plays a crucial role in embryonic development and tissue repair in adults. It is characterized by loosely organized cells embedded in an extracellular matrix composed of ground substance and fine fibers. Mesenchymal cells are typically stellate or spindle-shaped and possess the remarkable ability to differentiate into a variety of specialized cell types, including bone cells (osteoblasts), cartilage cells (chondrocytes), fat cells (adipocytes), muscle cells (myocytes), and blood cells.
During embryonic development, mesenchyme is derived from the mesoderm, one of the three primary germ layers.
