Membránrendszerek, or membrane systems, refer to a broad category of engineered structures and natural biological formations that utilize membranes to separate substances or control their passage. These systems are fundamental to numerous processes in both industry and biology, playing crucial roles in purification, energy generation, and cellular function.

In industrial applications, membrane systems are employed for separation and purification tasks. Examples include reverse osmosis for desalination and water purification, microfiltration and ultrafiltration for removing particles and macromolecules, and gas separation membranes used in industries like petrochemicals and air separation. These systems leverage the selective permeability of artificial membranes, which are typically made from polymers, ceramics, or metals, to allow specific molecules or ions to pass while retaining others.

Biologically, cell membranes are the quintessential example of natural membrane systems. These lipid bilayers, studded with proteins, regulate the transport of nutrients into cells, the removal of waste products, and the maintenance of internal cellular environments. Organelles within eukaryotic cells, such as mitochondria and the endoplasmic reticulum, also feature their own internal membrane systems that compartmentalize functions and facilitate complex biochemical reactions. The principles of selective permeability and controlled transport are central to the operation of both artificial and biological membrane systems.
