The Martindale test is a method for determining the abrasion resistance of textiles. Developed by the British company Joseph Lucas (part of the Lucas Industries group), it is widely used to assess the durability of fabrics used in upholstery, apparel, and other applications. The test involves rubbing a standard abrasive surface against a fabric sample under controlled pressure and speed. The number of cycles the fabric can withstand before showing signs of wear, such as pilling or loss of color, is recorded.

There are two main types of Martindale tests: the "abrasion test" and the "pilling test." The abrasion test measures the fabric's resistance to wear and tear, while the pilling test assesses its tendency to form small balls of fiber on the surface. The results are typically reported in Martindale cycles. Higher numbers indicate greater durability and resistance to abrasion or pilling. Different standards and benchmarks exist for various types of fabrics and intended uses. For example, upholstery fabrics often require a much higher Martindale rating than clothing fabrics. This test is crucial for manufacturers and consumers to understand the expected lifespan and performance of textile products.
