The Martindale test is a method for determining the abrasion resistance of textiles. Developed by the British company Joseph Lucas (part of the Lucas Industries group), it is widely used to assess the durability of fabrics used in upholstery, apparel, and other applications. The test involves rubbing a standard abrasive surface against a fabric sample under controlled pressure and speed. The number of cycles the fabric can withstand before showing signs of wear, such as pilling or loss of color, is recorded.
