The Martindale apparatus consists of a rotating disc on which the fabric sample is mounted, and a second disc that acts as the abradant. The sample is typically subjected to a specified number of abrasion cycles. During the test, the fabric is regularly inspected for signs of wear, such as fraying, pilling, or changes in color. The test is considered complete when the fabric sample fails according to predefined criteria, such as the appearance of a hole or significant degradation.

The results of the Martindale test are reported as the number of cycles the fabric withstood before failure.
