Marignano

Marignano is a locality in Lombardy, northern Italy. It is best known for its association with the Battle of Marignano, a major engagement of the Italian Wars that took place in September 1515 near the village of Marignano.

The battle pitted the Kingdom of France, under Francis I, against the Swiss Confederacy, which was allied with the Duchy of Milan and other Italian states. In a two-day engagement, French forces secured a decisive victory, a result that shifted the balance of power in northern Italy and helped establish French influence over Milan for a period.

Today, the site is described in historical sources as located in the Lombardy plain near Milan. The surrounding area remains largely rural, with agricultural activity and small settlements that typify the Milanese countryside. The name Marignano continues to appear in historical literature and commemorations related to the 1515 battle, preserving its memory in Italian Renaissance and military history.
