Malonaattiryhmän refers to the malonate functional group, which is a derivative of malonic acid. Chemically, it is characterized by a methylene group (CH2) flanked by two carbonyl groups (C=O). The general structure can be represented as R-OOC-CH2-COO-R', where R and R' are typically alkyl or aryl groups. Malonate esters, such as diethyl malonate, are particularly common and are important in organic synthesis.

The key feature of the malonate group is the acidity of the methylene protons. Due to the electron-withdrawing nature of the two adjacent carbonyl groups, the protons on the central carbon atom are relatively acidic and can be readily removed by a base to form a resonance-stabilized carbanion. This carbanion is a potent nucleophile and can participate in various carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions, such as alkylation and acylation.

The malonic ester synthesis is a classic example of the synthetic utility of the malonate group. In this reaction, a malonate ester is deprotonated, alkylated with an alkyl halide, and then hydrolyzed and decarboxylated to yield a substituted acetic acid. This method allows for the synthesis of a wide range of carboxylic acids with a two-carbon chain extension. Beyond this, malonate derivatives are also found in natural products and pharmaceuticals, highlighting their biological and chemical significance.
