Mallorcas

Mallorcas is a plural-form designation occasionally used to refer collectively to Mallorca and things associated with the island. The standard English name is Mallorca, and Mallorcas is not a formal geographic term in common use. Mallorca is the largest island of the Balearic Islands, located in the western Mediterranean and belonging to Spain. Its administrative center is Palma, which hosts the regional capital and major transport hub.

Geographically, Mallorca features a diverse landscape that includes the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range in the northwest, coastal plains, and sandy beaches along the eastern and southern shores. The island has a varied coastline with coves, cliffs, and harbors. Administratively, Mallorca forms part of the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands and is subdivided into municipalities.

Historically, Mallorca has been inhabited since prehistoric times and saw Lusitanian, Phoenician, and later Roman influences. In the medieval era it came under the Crown of Aragon and later became part of the Kingdom of Majorca. Culture and language on Mallorca reflect a mix of Catalan and Spanish influences. The local language, Mallorquín (a variant of Catalan), coexists with Spanish. Notable cultural heritage includes Gothic architecture such as the Palma Cathedral (La Seu), historic towns like Alcúdia and Pollença, and a culinary tradition featuring products like ensaimada and sobrasada. The Serra de Tramuntana has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011 for its cultural and landscape value.

Economically, tourism is the dominant activity, supported by agriculture, wine production, and crafts. The island’s environment and protected areas are important for sustainable tourism and conservation.
