Malawisaurus

Malawisaurus is a genus of titanosauriform sauropod dinosaur that lived in what is now Malawi during the Early Cretaceous period. The name Malawisaurus means "Malawi lizard." It is known from fossilized remains discovered in the Dinosaur Beds of the Chilongwe Hill Formation.

The type species, Malawisaurus dixeyi, was first described by Sidney Williston and Roy Chapman Andrews in 1920 as a new species of Gigantosaurus. Later research by William Blows in 1991 reclassified it as a titanosauriform. Malawisaurus was a quadrupedal herbivore, likely feeding on low-lying vegetation.

Its discovery in Africa is significant as it adds to the understanding of sauropod diversity on the continent during the Cretaceous. While not as large as some of its titanosaur relatives, Malawisaurus represents an important part of the evolutionary history of these massive herbivores. The fossil material, though incomplete, has provided valuable insights into the anatomy and relationships of early titanosauriforms. Further discoveries in the region may help to more fully understand this dinosaur and its environment.
