Mahdist
Mahdist refers to the Islamic movement and political entity that emerged in the late 19th century in the region that is now Sudan. The movement was founded by Muhammad Ahmad al-Mahdi, who claimed to be the prophesied Mahdi—an expected redeemer in Islamic eschatology—after he received a letter from an imam in 1881. Ahmad’s claim resonated with widespread dissatisfaction among local populations, including dissatisfaction with Ottoman-Egyptian rule, tribal grievances, and social grievances such as the colonial expropriation of land and the imposition of foreign taxes.
