Magnesiumhydroksid

Magnesiumhydroksid is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Mg(OH)2. It is a white, amorphous solid that is practically insoluble in water. It occurs naturally as the mineral brucite. Magnesiumhydroksid can be prepared by adding soluble hydroxide salts, such as sodium hydroxide, to solutions of magnesium salts, like magnesium chloride or magnesium sulfate. This process results in the precipitation of magnesium hydroxide.

The compound exhibits basic properties due to the presence of hydroxide ions. It reacts with acids to form magnesium salts and water. For example, its reaction with hydrochloric acid produces magnesium chloride and water. This acid-neutralizing capability is exploited in various applications.

Magnesiumhydroksid is widely used as an antacid to relieve heartburn, indigestion, and upset stomach. It works by neutralizing excess stomach acid. It is also employed as a laxative, drawing water into the intestines to soften stool and promote bowel movements. In industrial settings, magnesiumhydroksid serves as a flame retardant in plastics and is used in wastewater treatment to precipitate heavy metals. It can also be found in some toothpastes as a mild abrasive and in cosmetics.
