MRPszámításokban involves several key steps. It begins with a master production schedule (MPS) which details which end products are to be produced, in what quantities, and by when. This is then used to determine the gross requirements for all component parts and raw materials needed to fulfill the MPS. The system considers on-hand inventory, scheduled receipts, and planned orders to calculate the net requirements for each item.

A crucial part of MRPszámításokban is the bill of materials (BOM), which lists all the subassemblies, components, and raw materials required to manufacture a single unit of a product. By "exploding" the BOM, MRP determines the exact quantities of each item needed, considering lead times for procurement and manufacturing. The output of these calculations includes planned orders for purchasing raw materials and manufacturing orders for subassemblies and finished goods, specifying the quantity and due date for each.
