MPEG-DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) is a widely adopted standard for adaptive bitrate streaming (ABR) of multimedia content over the internet. It is defined by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) as part of the MPEG-21 family of standards, specifically under ISO/IEC 23009-1. MPEG-DASH enables efficient delivery of video, audio, and other media by allowing clients to dynamically switch between different quality levels based on network conditions, device capabilities, and user preferences.

The standard defines a format for segmenting media content into small, independently downloadable chunks, typically in the form of MPEG-TS (Transport Stream) or MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) files. These segments are accompanied by an XML-based Media Presentation Description (MPD), which provides metadata about the available representations (e.g., resolutions, bitrates) and their timing information. Clients, such as media players or browsers, parse the MPD to select the most appropriate segment for playback, optimizing for smooth streaming without excessive buffering or rebuffering.

MPEG-DASH is designed to be platform-agnostic, supporting a wide range of devices, including smartphones, smart TVs, and web browsers. It is widely used by streaming services, content providers, and developers to deliver high-quality streaming experiences. The standard also supports features like content protection (e.g., encryption via Common Encryption), multiple audio and subtitle tracks, and adaptive streaming over both IPv4 and IPv6 networks.

While MPEG-DASH is the most prominent standard for adaptive streaming, alternatives like HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) and Smooth Streaming exist. However, MPEG-DASH’s open and standardized nature makes it a preferred choice for interoperability and future-proofing streaming applications. Implementations of MPEG-DASH are available in various open-source and commercial libraries, ensuring broad compatibility across different ecosystems.
