MILNETs refers to the military network portion of the ARPANET. ARPANET, the precursor to the internet, was initially developed by the Advanced Research Projects Agency of the U.S. Department of Defense. In 1983, ARPANET was split into two distinct networks: MILNET for unclassified military use and ARPANET for research purposes. This division was made to separate the less demanding military traffic from the more experimental research traffic, thereby improving the performance and security of both networks.
