MALTkudokset

MALTkudokset, an acronym for Mucosa-Associated Lymphoid Tissue, refers to collections of lymphoid tissue found in the mucous membranes of various organs, primarily in the digestive, respiratory, and urogenital tracts. These tissues are a critical component of the immune system's first line of defense against inhaled or ingested pathogens. Unlike encapsulated lymphoid organs such as lymph nodes or the spleen, MALT is distributed throughout the submucosal layers of mucosal surfaces.

The primary role of MALT is to detect and respond to antigens encountered at these vulnerable sites. It comprises specialized structures like Peyer's patches in the small intestine, lymphoid follicles in the appendix and tonsils, and isolated lymphoid follicles scattered throughout the gut. These structures contain various immune cells, including B lymphocytes, T lymphocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells, all working together to mount an immune response.

MALT plays a vital role in maintaining mucosal immunity, a specialized arm of the immune system that prevents the entry of harmful substances while allowing the absorption of nutrients. This is achieved through the production of secretory IgA antibodies, which are transported across the mucosal epithelium and form a protective barrier on the surface. Dysregulation or dysfunction of MALT can contribute to various inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.
