Mõlemat

Mõlemat is an Estonian grammatical form: the partitive singular of the quantifier mõlemad, meaning "both." It is used with singular nouns in the partitive case to refer to two items considered together.

The form is invariant across noun gender and is contrasted with mõlemad, which is the nominative plural form. Mõlemat appears in phrases such as mõlemat inimest (both people) and mõlemat varianti (both options). It often occurs in contexts where the quantity is unspecified or when the noun is in partitive due to the action or state described by the verb.

In broader Estonian grammar, the partitive case is used for indefinite quantities, with negation, or with certain verbs and after some prepositions. When mõlemat modifies a noun, it signals that two items are being referred to as a pair, without naming or counting them separately beyond two. The word thus functions as a determiner indicating duality in a non-absolute, non-counted sense.
