Mértékegységgé is a Hungarian term that translates to "unit of measurement" in English. It refers to a standardized quantity used to express the magnitude of a physical quantity. For instance, meters are used to measure length, kilograms to measure mass, and seconds to measure time. The concept of a unit of measurement is fundamental to science, engineering, and everyday life, enabling consistent and comparable observations and calculations.

Historically, various units of measurement existed, often based on arbitrary references like body parts or natural phenomena. However, as trade and scientific understanding grew, the need for standardized and internationally recognized units became apparent.
