Lögmanna

Lögmanna is the genitive plural form of lögmaður, the Icelandic word for lawyer. The nominative plural is lögmenn, while lögmanna denotes “of the lawyers” in legal or formal Icelandic texts. The term derives from Old Norse lögmaðr, from lög (law) and maðr (man).

In modern usage, lögmaður refers to a legal professional who provides legal advice, drafts documents, and represents clients in court. Lawyers may work in private practice, for corporations, in government, or as in-house counsel. To practice law in Iceland, one typically completes a university degree in law and is admitted to the Icelandic Bar, which regulates the profession.

Historically, the word reflects the central role of legal professionals in Icelandic society, from early legal assemblies to contemporary jurisprudence. While lögmanna is primarily a grammatical form, it appears in legal texts and scholarly works when referring to groups of lawyers.
