Lämpötilasäätimiä, known in English as temperature controllers, are devices used to maintain a desired temperature in a system. They are fundamental components in a vast array of applications, from industrial processes to everyday home appliances. The core function of a lämpötilasäädin is to measure the current temperature of a system, compare it to a setpoint temperature, and then adjust the system's heating or cooling mechanism accordingly to minimize any deviation.

These controllers typically consist of three main parts: a sensor, a controller, and an actuator. The sensor, such as a thermocouple or a resistance temperature detector (RTD), measures the actual temperature. The controller, which can be analog or digital, processes the sensor's input and compares it to the desired setpoint. Based on this comparison, the controller sends a signal to the actuator, which is the component responsible for changing the temperature. Actuators can include heating elements, cooling fans, valves, or pumps.

There are various types of lämpötilasäätimiä, with different control algorithms. The simplest is on-off control, where the heating or cooling is either fully engaged or completely off. More sophisticated controllers use proportional (P), proportional-integral (PI), or proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control. PID controllers are widely used because they offer precise and stable temperature regulation by considering the present error, the accumulated past error, and the predicted future error.
