Lämmönarvoon

Lämmönarvoon refers to the calorific value or heating value of a substance, typically a fuel. It quantifies the amount of thermal energy released when a specific quantity of the substance is completely burned or combusted. This value is crucial for understanding the energy content and efficiency of different fuels.

There are two main ways to express lämmönarvoon: the higher heating value (HHV) and the lower heating value (LHV). The higher heating value assumes that the water produced during combustion condenses into liquid, thus releasing its latent heat of vaporization. The lower heating value, on the other hand, assumes that the water remains in gaseous form, and its latent heat is not recovered. In practical applications, the lower heating value is often more relevant as the water vapor typically escapes as steam.

Lämmönarvoon is usually measured in units of energy per unit mass or volume, such as megajoules per kilogram (MJ/kg) or megajoules per cubic meter (MJ/m³). Different fuels have significantly different lämmönarvoon. For example, wood has a lower heating value than natural gas or gasoline. This difference in calorific value directly impacts how much energy can be extracted from a given amount of fuel, influencing its suitability for various applications, from heating homes to powering vehicles.
