Luustruktuuris

Luustruktuuris refers to the skeletal system in Estonian. The skeletal system is the body's internal framework, providing support, protection, and facilitating movement. It is composed of bones, cartilage, ligaments, and tendons. Humans typically have 206 bones at maturity, although this number can vary slightly, particularly in infants due to the presence of unfused bones.

The skeletal system can be broadly divided into two main parts: the axial skeleton and the appendicular skeleton. The axial skeleton includes the skull, vertebral column, and rib cage, which form the central axis of the body. The skull protects the brain, the vertebral column supports the body and protects the spinal cord, and the rib cage encloses and protects vital organs like the heart and lungs.

The appendicular skeleton consists of the bones of the limbs and the girdles that attach them to the axial skeleton. This includes the bones of the arms, legs, shoulders, and pelvis. These structures are primarily involved in locomotion and manipulation of the environment.

Bones themselves are living tissues that undergo constant remodeling. They are made up of bone tissue, bone marrow, periosteum, and endosteum. Bone marrow is responsible for producing blood cells. The skeletal system also plays a crucial role in mineral storage, particularly calcium and phosphorus, which are essential for various bodily functions. Diseases affecting the luustruktuuris can range from fractures and infections to chronic conditions like osteoporosis and arthritis.
