Lukitusmerkintäkäytännöt, or lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures, are safety protocols designed to prevent accidental startup of machinery and equipment during maintenance or servicing. These procedures ensure that hazardous energy sources are isolated and rendered inoperable before any work begins. The primary goal is to protect workers from serious injury or death caused by unexpected machine activation or the release of stored energy.

The lockout/tagout process involves several key steps. First, the affected employee must notify all other personnel who work in the area that maintenance or servicing is being performed and that the equipment will be shut down and locked out. Second, the equipment must be shut down in the correct manner according to its operating procedures. Third, the energy isolation devices, such as circuit breakers or disconnect switches, are identified and located. Fourth, the lockout devices are applied to the energy isolating devices to ensure that the equipment cannot be operated. A tag is then attached to the lockout device, clearly indicating who applied the lock and why.

Fifth, it is crucial to verify that the isolation has been effective. This may involve attempting to start the equipment or using testing devices to ensure all energy sources are de-energized. If any residual or stored energy is present, such as from capacitors or gravity, it must be dissipated or restrained before proceeding. Finally, only after all these steps have been completed and verified can maintenance or servicing begin. After the work is finished, the equipment must be inspected, all tools and materials removed, and all personnel cleared from the work area before the lockout devices are removed and the equipment is re-energized. Lockout/tagout procedures are a critical component of workplace safety in many industries.
