Lufttetthetstesting, also known as airtightness testing or blower door testing, is a method used to measure how airtight a building's envelope is. It quantifies the amount of uncontrolled air leakage through the building's exterior, which can significantly impact energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and occupant comfort. The testing process involves using a powerful fan, typically mounted in an exterior doorway, to depressurize or over-pressurize the building. This pressure difference forces air through any leaks in the building envelope. Sensors then measure the airflow rate required to maintain a specific pressure difference, typically 50 Pascals.

The results of lufttetthetstesting are usually expressed in terms of air changes per hour at 50 Pascals (ACH50) or as a leakage rate per unit area. A lower ACH50 value indicates a more airtight building. High levels of air leakage can lead to increased heating and cooling costs as conditioned air escapes and unconditioned air infiltrates. It can also contribute to moisture problems, mold growth, and drafts. Conversely, a well-sealed building improves thermal performance, reduces energy consumption, and enhances comfort.

Lufttetthetstesting is becoming an increasingly important part of building codes and green building certifications worldwide. It helps identify areas where insulation and air sealing can be improved, leading to better building performance. The testing can be performed on new constructions to verify compliance with standards or on existing buildings to diagnose energy performance issues.
