Louvrepyramiden

The Louvre Pyramid is a large glass and metal pyramid situated in the main courtyard of the Louvre Museum in Paris, France. It was designed by Chinese-American architect I. M. Pei and completed in 1989. The pyramid serves as the main entrance to the Louvre, leading visitors to the museum's underground reception area.

The structure's design was controversial at the time of its conception, with some critics deeming it a jarringly modern addition to the historic palace. However, it has since become a widely recognized icon of Paris and a significant architectural landmark. The pyramid is composed of 676 glass segments and stands 21.6 meters (71 feet) tall. Its design was inspired by the Great Pyramid of Giza, though it is significantly smaller.

Beneath the pyramid lies a vast underground space that houses ticket counters, information desks, shops, and access to the three main wings of the museum: Denon, Sully, and Richelieu. The contrast between the ancient grandeur of the Louvre and the contemporary design of the pyramid is a deliberate architectural statement, intended to bridge the past and the present. The pyramid is also illuminated at night, creating a striking visual effect against the Parisian skyline.
