Lomat

Lomat is the plural form of the Finnish noun loma, meaning holiday or vacation. It refers to a period away from work or study, typically planned in advance and taken during a calendar year. Loma can denote any type of break, while more specific terms name the season or purpose, such as kesäloma (summer vacation) or talviloma (winter break).

In everyday language, people speak of taking lomat, for example “minulla on kaksi viikkoa lomaa” (I have two weeks of vacation). The term is common in work and school contexts and appears in phrases about planning time off, holidays for families, and travel arrangements.

In Finland, paid holidays are regulated by law and by collective agreements. The Annual Holidays Act (vuosilomalaki) sets the framework for accrual and taking holidays, and employers and unions determine specifics such as scheduling and pay during holidays. The concept of lomat is closely linked to employment contracts, leave policies, and the broader system of social benefits.

Outside Finnish, lomat is primarily a Finnish word and does not have a standard meaning in other languages. It may occasionally appear in names, titles, or proper nouns in non-Finnish contexts, but it is not widely used as a common noun elsewhere.
