Lohtaja

Lohtaja is a former municipality in Finland. It is located in the province of Western Finland and was part of the Ostrobothnia region. In 2009, Lohtaja merged with the neighboring municipality of Kälviä and the town of Ullava to form the new municipality of Kokkola. The administrative center of Lohtaja was the village of Lohtajan kirkonkylä.

The area of Lohtaja was primarily rural, with a focus on agriculture and fishing. The coastline along the Gulf of Bothnia was a significant feature of the municipality. Lohtaja's history dates back to the medieval period, with its church being a notable landmark. The name Lohtaja is believed to derive from the Finnish word "lohti," meaning a bay or inlet, referring to its coastal geography.

Following the merger, the former area of Lohtaja became a district within the larger municipality of Kokkola. The services and infrastructure previously managed by Lohtaja are now part of Kokkola's municipal administration. The natural landscape and cultural heritage of Lohtaja continue to be appreciated within the new administrative structure.
