Logiline

A logline, occasionally spelled logiline, is a brief summary of a story's premise used to pitch a project. It distills the central character, their goal, the main obstacle, and the stakes into one sentence.

Its primary function is to communicate the core idea quickly to producers, agents, or executives. Loglines are used in pitches, development notes, and competition entries, and they often shape how a project is perceived before reading a full script.

A strong logline typically presents the protagonist, their goal, the conflict or obstacle, and the consequences or stakes. It is usually written in present tense, uses an active voice, and remains concise, often around 25 to 40 words.

Examples: A washed-up detective must stop a mastermind from plunging the city into a blackout before nightfall. In a dystopian future, a quiet mechanic joins a rebel crew to steal a satellite and ignite a rebellion.

Differences and tips: A logline is not a full synopsis; it should be one sentence, focused on a single premise, and avoid listing multiple plotlines or characters. Tips: ensure clarity, specificity, and a unique hook.
