Liitpolümerisatsioon

Liitpolümerisatsioon, also known as copolymerization, is a polymerization reaction in which two or more different monomer species react to form a polymer in which the different monomer units are incorporated into the polymer chain. This is in contrast to homopolymerization, where only one type of monomer is used. The resulting polymer is called a copolymer.

Copolymers can be formed in various ways, depending on how the monomer units are arranged along the polymer chain. Linear copolymers can be random, alternating, block, or graft copolymers. In a random copolymer, the monomer units are distributed randomly along the chain. Alternating copolymers have a regular, alternating sequence of the two monomer types. Block copolymers consist of long sequences of one monomer type followed by long sequences of the other monomer type. Graft copolymers have polymer chains of one type attached as side chains to a main polymer chain of another type.

The properties of a copolymer can be significantly different from those of the homopolymers of its constituent monomers. This allows for the design of polymers with tailored properties for specific applications. For example, by combining monomers with different properties, one can create copolymers that are more flexible, stronger, more resistant to heat or chemicals, or have improved optical or electrical characteristics.

Copolymerization is a widely used technique in polymer science and industry. It finds applications in the production of a vast range of materials, including plastics, elastomers, adhesives, coatings, and specialty chemicals. The ability to control the composition and architecture of copolymers provides a powerful tool for materials design and innovation.
