Liitmisvõttes is an Estonian term that translates to "additive inverse" or "opposite" in English. It refers to a number that, when added to a given number, results in zero. For any real number 'a', its additive inverse is '-a'. For example, the additive inverse of 5 is -5, because 5 + (-5) = 0. Similarly, the additive inverse of -3 is 3, because -3 + 3 = 0. The additive inverse of 0 is 0 itself, as 0 + 0 = 0. This concept is fundamental in arithmetic and algebra, forming the basis for subtraction, where subtracting a number is equivalent to adding its additive inverse.
