Liitiumsool

Liitiumsool, in Estonian usage, refers to a family of chemical compounds that contain the lithium cation (Li+) paired with various anions. The most common examples are lithium carbonate (Li2CO3), lithium chloride (LiCl), and lithium citrate (C6H5Li3O7). Lithium salts occur in nature in mineral forms and in brines, with major production sources including continental brine deposits and lithium-bearing pegmatite ores. Production typically involves extracting lithium-bearing material, concentrating it, and converting it into carbonate or other salt forms suitable for sale or further processing.

Lithium salts have wide applications in both medicine and industry. In medicine, lithium carbonate is the best known and has long been used as a mood stabilizer for bipolar disorder, and lithium salts are sometimes employed for preventing migraines or treating cluster headaches. The exact mechanism is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve modulation of neurotransmitter signaling and inhibition of certain enzymes such as glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK-3). Because lithium has a narrow therapeutic window, careful dosing and regular monitoring of blood levels, kidney function, and thyroid function are standard practice. Common adverse effects include tremor, increased thirst and urination, weight gain, and, with long-term use, potential thyroid or kidney issues. Lithium therapy may interact with NSAIDs, diuretics, and other medications, and is typically avoided or carefully managed during pregnancy.

Industrially, lithium salts serve as precursors for lithium metal production and as components in electrolytes and ceramics. In battery technology, lithium salts contribute to electrolyte formulations used in lithium-ion and related batteries, highlighting their ongoing economic and strategic importance. Environmental and safety considerations include mining impacts and the need for proper handling and storage of reactive salts.
