Lichtabhängig is a German term that translates to "light-dependent" in English. It is primarily used in scientific contexts, particularly in biology and chemistry, to describe processes or phenomena that are influenced by or require light to occur.

In biology, the most common example of a light-dependent process is photosynthesis. Plants, algae, and some bacteria utilize light energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose (a sugar for energy) and oxygen. This process, known as the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis, captures solar energy and transforms it into chemical energy in the form of ATP and NADPH. Without light, these initial stages of photosynthesis cannot proceed.
