Lgalactaric

Lgalactaric, also known as mucic acid, is a dicarboxylic acid derived from galactose. Its chemical formula is C6H10O8. It is a white crystalline solid that is insoluble in water and alcohol. Lgalactaric is produced commercially by the nitric acid oxidation of galactose or lactose. It can also be isolated from certain plant gums and mucilages.

The structure of lgalactaric features carboxyl groups at both ends of a six-carbon chain, with hydroxyl groups on the intervening carbons. It exists as two enantiomers due to a chiral center, but the term lgalactaric typically refers to the specific enantiomer derived from L-galactose. Mucic acid is known for its resistance to oxidation and microbial degradation.

Lgalactaric has found applications in various industries. It is used as a raw material in the synthesis of polymers, resins, and plasticizers. It has also been employed as a chelating agent and in some pharmaceutical preparations, although its use in these areas is less common.
