Leveling

Leveling is the process of bringing a surface or reference plane to uniform horizontality. The term is used in fields ranging from construction to gaming, where it also denotes progression in capability. Spelling varies by dialect, with leveling common in American English and levelling in British English.

In video games, leveling up means increasing a character’s experience level after earning points. Higher levels typically improve attributes, unlock abilities, and grant access to new content. Leveling curves and caps shape how quickly progress occurs and may encourage grinding.

In surveying and construction, leveling establishes a common vertical reference. A spirit level checks horizontality, while an optical or digital level measures height differences to set foundations, grades, or roads. Benchmarks and leveling staff support accurate elevation surveys across sites.

In manufacturing and maintenance, leveling ensures machines and platforms are stable and accurate. Adjustable feet, shims, or hydraulic jacks compensate for uneven floors, minimizing vibration and wear and helping ensure precise measurements and proper operation.
