Lemmatiering

Lemmatiering is a process in natural language processing (NLP) that reduces a word to its base or dictionary form, known as the lemma. This is distinct from stemming, which simply chops off the ends of words. For example, a stemmer might reduce "running" to "runn," while a lemmatizer would correctly identify "running" as a form of the verb "run" and return "run." Lemmatiering relies on a lexicon and morphological analysis to understand the context and meaning of a word to determine its proper lemma.

The primary goal of lemmatiering is to group together different inflected forms of a word so that they can be analyzed as a single item. This is crucial for tasks such as information retrieval, text summarization, and machine translation, where understanding the semantic meaning of words is paramount. By normalizing words to their lemma, NLP systems can avoid treating variations of the same word as separate entities, leading to more accurate and efficient processing.
