Legemeer

Legemeer is a small village located in the municipality of De Fryske Marren in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. It is situated in the southern part of the province, near the border with the province of Overijssel. The village is characterized by its rural setting, with many farms and agricultural landscapes surrounding it.

Historically, Legemeer was an independent municipality until 1984, when it merged with several other smaller municipalities to form the municipality of Skarsterlân. In 2014, Skarsterlân itself merged with other municipalities to create the current municipality of De Fryske Marren. The name Legemeer is believed to derive from the Old Frisian words for "low" and "lake," referring to its proximity to low-lying water bodies.

The village has a modest population and retains a close-knit community feel. Like many rural settlements in Friesland, its economy has traditionally been based on agriculture and dairy farming. Over time, some residents have also become commuters, working in larger nearby towns and cities. Legemeer's infrastructure includes a few local amenities. The surrounding natural environment, with its characteristic Frisian waterways and polder landscapes, is a significant feature of the area, offering opportunities for recreation such as cycling and boating.
