Lavakalustot

Lavakalustot is a Finnish term that broadly refers to the furnishings and equipment found within a sauna. The concept encompasses both the functional and decorative elements that contribute to the overall sauna experience. Essential lavakalustot items typically include the benches, known as lauteet, where bathers sit or recline. The material and design of these benches are crucial for comfort and heat distribution.

Beyond the seating, lavakalustot also includes the sauna stove, or kiuas, which heats the stones to produce steam. Accessories such as buckets, ladles, and thermometers are also considered part of the standard lavakalustot, facilitating the practice of löyly, the pouring of water onto the hot stones to create steam. Some saunas may also feature decorative elements like wooden wall panels, lighting fixtures, and even small tables or shelves for personal belongings or drinks.
