Latenssilämpövarasto refers to a thermal energy storage system that utilizes the latent heat of a phase-change material (PCM). Phase-change materials absorb or release large amounts of thermal energy during a phase transition, such as melting or solidifying, at a nearly constant temperature. This property allows them to store and release heat efficiently without significant temperature fluctuations. The stored heat can then be utilized later for heating or cooling purposes.

Latenssilämpövarasto systems are typically composed of a container holding the PCM and a heat exchanger. During the charging phase, excess heat is transferred to the PCM, causing it to melt. When heat is needed, the PCM solidifies, releasing the stored latent heat. Common applications include solar thermal energy storage, building heating and cooling, and temperature regulation in electronic devices. The choice of PCM depends on the desired operating temperature range and the specific application requirements. Materials like paraffin waxes, salt hydrates, and fatty acids are frequently employed due to their suitable phase transition temperatures and thermal properties. This technology offers a compact and efficient way to manage thermal energy, contributing to energy savings and improved system performance.
