Löschzüge

Löschzüge are units within the German fire service, specifically organized for firefighting operations. The term translates roughly to "extinguishing platoon" or "firefighting unit." A Löschzug is typically composed of several fire engines and the personnel to operate them. The exact composition can vary depending on the size and type of the fire station, as well as the specific needs of the municipality it serves.

Generally, a Löschzug includes one or more "Löschgruppenfahrzeuge" (LG) which are the primary firefighting vehicles carrying water, hoses, and basic equipment. They may also be supplemented by a "Hilfeleistungslöschgruppenfahrzeug" (HLF) which is equipped for technical rescue operations in addition to firefighting. Larger Löschzüge might also include a "Tanklöschfahrzeug" (TLF) for carrying significant amounts of water or foam, or a "Drehleiter" (DLK), a turntable ladder fire engine for high-level access and rescue.

When a fire alarm is received, the designated Löschzug is dispatched to the scene. The command structure within the Löschzug is hierarchical, with the Zugführer (platoon leader) in overall command. The primary objective of a Löschzug is to extinguish fires, rescue individuals, and mitigate damage to property. They are a fundamental component of the operational readiness of German fire departments.
