Külmuda

Külmuda is an Estonian verb meaning to become cold or to freeze. It is used for liquids, surfaces, and living organisms that pass from a warmer or more fluid state to a colder or solid state. The standard example is vesi külmub (the water freezes). The root külm means cold, and the -uda form indicates a process or onset.

As a scientific term, freezing is a phase transition from liquid to solid that occurs when a substance’s temperature reaches its freezing point under suitable pressure. For water at standard pressure, this point is 0°C. Freezing involves crystallization and the release of latent heat; water expands upon freezing, so ice is less dense than liquid water and floats. Nucleation and the presence of impurities influence crystal formation, and the rate of cooling affects crystal size and texture.

In nature, freezing produces frost on surfaces and ice on bodies of water. Ice’s relatively low density allows lakes and ponds to insulate aquatic life during winter. Organisms have adaptations to freezing conditions, and some environments exhibit supercooling, where liquids are cooled below their freezing point without solidifying.
