Käibemaksumäärad

Käibemaksumäärad refer to the rates of value-added tax (VAT) applicable to goods and services in Estonia. The standard rate of value-added tax in Estonia is 20%. This rate applies to most goods and services unless specifically exempted or subject to a reduced rate.

There are also reduced rates of value-added tax. A reduced rate of 9% applies to certain goods and services. These include, for example, medicines, medical equipment, books, educational materials, and certain agricultural products. Additionally, a reduced rate of 5% applies to specific items like children's clothing and footwear, and certain types of accommodation services.

Exemptions from VAT are also in place for specific transactions, such as financial services, insurance services, and certain educational and healthcare services. These transactions are not subject to VAT, meaning no tax is charged on them.

The Estonian Tax and Customs Board is responsible for administering and enforcing VAT regulations, including the correct application of the different rates. Businesses are required to register for VAT if their taxable turnover exceeds a certain threshold, and they must correctly account for and remit the applicable VAT on their sales. Changes to VAT rates are typically legislated by the Riigikogu, the Estonian parliament, and are announced in the official gazette.
