Kvaternäärirakenteiden is a Finnish term that translates to "quaternary structures" in English. In chemistry and biology, quaternary structure refers to the highest level of protein organization. It describes the arrangement of multiple protein subunits, also known as polypeptides, in a complete, functional protein complex. These subunits are held together by non-covalent interactions, such as hydrogen bonds, ionic bonds, van der Waals forces, and hydrophobic interactions, as well as sometimes disulfide bonds.

The assembly of individual protein subunits into a quaternary structure is crucial for the protein's overall function. This arrangement can create active sites that are not present in individual subunits or can modulate the activity of existing sites. For example, hemoglobin, a protein responsible for oxygen transport in the blood, is a tetramer, meaning it consists of four subunits. The cooperative binding of oxygen to hemoglobin is a direct result of its quaternary structure.

Many enzymes and other biological molecules exist as quaternary structures. The specific spatial arrangement of these subunits dictates the protein's three-dimensional shape and, consequently, its biological role. The dissociation or alteration of these quaternary structures can lead to loss of function or disease. Understanding quaternary structure is therefore fundamental to comprehending protein behavior and biological processes.
