Kvantorivahetus, also known as quantifier exchange, is a concept in mathematical logic and formal semantics that deals with the order of quantifiers. In a statement containing multiple quantifiers, such as "for all x" and "there exists y," the order in which they appear can significantly alter the meaning of the proposition.

For example, consider the statement "For every person x, there is a language y such that x speaks y." This can be represented logically as ∀x ∃y S(x,y), where S(x,y) means "x speaks y." This statement asserts that for each individual person, there is at least one language they speak.

Now consider the reversed order: "There exists a language y such that for every person x, x speaks y." This can be represented as ∃y ∀x S(x,y). This statement claims that there is a single language that every single person speaks, which is a much stronger and likely false assertion. The difference in meaning arises solely from swapping the order of the universal quantifier (∀) and the existential quantifier (∃).

In general, interchanging quantifiers can lead to different truth values for a given proposition. This highlights the importance of precise notation and careful consideration of quantifier order in logical reasoning and the interpretation of natural language statements that involve quantification. The rule that ∀x ∃y P(x,y) does not imply ∃y ∀x P(x,y) is a fundamental aspect of first-order logic.
